Lianna Genovese and Matthew Rosato invented devices to assist those suffering from arthritis

Lianna Genovese developed a device to assist those suffering from arthritis or cerebral palsy with wrist movements for writing, drawing, or using tech devices with a styler. She developed this device as a class project in the first year of university.

Two Hamiltonians are among eight finalists in a national competition which provides funding for innovative projects that help people suffering from arthritis.

The Arthritis Ideator Program — run by the Arthritis Society — received 21 submissions from innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups across Canada working on solutions to help improve the lives of people with the disease.

Among the devices shortlisted for the awards are Guided Hands by ImaginAble Solutions and WithinStride by PROVA Innovations.

Guided Hands is the brainchild of Lianna Genovese, a 22-year-old in her final year of a combined biomedical engineering and health sciences program at McMaster University.

Matthew Rosato is one of the finalists for an Arthritis Ideatory Award. He has invented a device to assist people suffering from cerebral palsy or oestoarthritis with their walking. He is seen here working in his lab, at Forge Incubator.

PROVA Innovations founder Matthew Rosato is also up for an award.

Rosato’s Hamilton-based company has designed the first-ever non-invasive, home-based device that guides movement in patients suffering from osteoarthritis, reducing pressure on the hips and knee joints.

The ‘smart’ insole helps with gait rehabilitation without professional assistance and acts as a virtual trainer.
