New Strategic Partnerships Signal the Near Completion of Smart Mobility Network in Hamilton

Hamilton, Ont., July 22, 2020 – Innovation Factory’s Centre for Integrated Transportation and Mobility (CITM), a program providing services and resources to accelerate the development of connected, multi-modal mobility solutions, is pleased to announce the expansion of its Smart Mobility Network and the addition of two strategic partners, HCE Telecom and iSmartways Technologies.

The addition of HCE Telecom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the City of Hamilton, and iSmartways Technologies ensures robust, high-speed internet and private network connectivity for the entire CITM Smart Mobility Network, with the addition of cellular vehicle to vehicle (CV2-X) technology.  This final phase of development rounds out the technology suite already in place from Nokia (wireless communications) and Ubicquia, makers of the City IQ, a streetlight mounted smart city system.  CITM is in the final phase of completing its Smart Mobility Network, which offers a world-class integrated testing environment featuring 4G/LTE, CV2-X and other vehicle, pedestrian and smart city network infrastructure on both private and public testbeds within the City of Hamilton.

HCE Telecom joins the CITM ecosystem as the exclusive provider of high-speed managed network connectivity to all smart mobility equipment in the CITM Smart Mobility Network.  HCE provides custom, flexible high-speed fibre internet and data solutions for critical infrastructure in the GTHA to enterprise businesses, as well as government and essential service sectors.

“HCE Telecom is proud to be a partner in the CITM Smart Mobility Network. We are excited to be working alongside CITM / Innovation Factory, enabling the deployment of an integrated communications platform that fosters local innovation in Hamilton,” said Jeff Cowan, CEO of HCE Telecom.

iSmartways Technology Inc. supports the CITM Smart Mobility Network specializing in V2X (Vehicle to Everything) hardware and software solutions. iSmartways is an autonomous vehicle / smart mobility solution provider to automotive OEMs, Tier automotive suppliers, road operators and system integrators around the world.

“iSmartWays is very excited about the opportunity to work with Innovation Factory on the creation of its autonomous vehicle and smart mobility network. We look forward to supporting Innovation Factory’s deployment and development of V2X solutions and we are thrilled to share our global knowledge and expertise with private and public sector organizations in Ontario wishing to make smart cities smarter, improve road safety and traffic flow, and reduce congestion and associated emissions,” said Walter Espinoza, Vice-President of iSmartWays.

Working as a partner with the City of Hamilton’s Smart City and Digital Transformation programs, CITM and its Smart Mobility Network compliments Hamilton’s efforts to improve quality of life for residents.  This can be seen through the City’s support for the development and implementation of Smart City technologies and for establishing an ecosystem that enables the creation of new technology companies and the job opportunities they bring.

“Smart Mobility, including connected and autonomous vehicles are beginning to change the way goods and people move within and in-between cities.  Innovation Factory, their Centre for Integrated Transportation and Mobility and their corporate and entrepreneurial partners are a vital part of that change, supporting the development of new companies and the commercialization of foundational technologies and solutions.  The new partnerships with HCE Telecom and iSmartways Technologies, as well as the ongoing support from the City of Hamilton, are an indication of the commitment to building a better city, improving city services and bringing innovation and new companies to the City of Hamilton,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

CITM is one of six Regional Technology Development Sites (RTDS) within Ontario’s Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN), led by OCE.  CITM is aggressively pursuing its mandate to support Ontario-based small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop, prototype, and validate new technologies in the autonomous and connected vehicle / integrated transportation and mobility sectors. CITM provides companies with access to its unique Smart Mobility Network along with business and technical advisory services to smooth the path to commercialization.

“AVIN and OCE are thrilled to be a part of the City of Hamilton’s initiatives that deliver on the opportunities offered by automotive technology and mobility innovation, such as automated vehicle and smart transportation systems, and address the technological demands of Ontario’s future,” said Raed Kadri, Head of Ontario’s Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network.  “With these new partnerships, CITM moves into the next phase of its Smart Mobility Network deployment, providing a technology suite to companies, start-ups and researchers looking to design and build integrated transportation and mobility solutions, including autonomous vehicle systems for both people and goods.”
