We Won! A night at Hamilton’s Outstanding Business Achievement Awards

A blog recap of the Outstanding Business Achievement Awards by Innovation Factory Executive Director, David Carter Photo by Kevin Browne.

I feel great about Innovation Factory winning the award for “Best Not-for-Profit” at yesterday evening’s Hamilton Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Achievement Awards. However, though accepting an award is great, you sit down afterwards and finally remember all the people you need to thank! I of course want to thank the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, which has created a close-knit community out of all our local businesses and not-for-profits (NFPs).

OBAAs2

My congratulations go out to iF’s fellow nominees in the NFP category last evening – Sustainable Hamilton and Hamilton District Christian High – it’s an honour to be recognized in a category with such esteemed organizations. I want to thank all our NFP peers across Hamilton, nominated or not. We all win because we’re building great communities and clusters here in the city.

NFPs generally run on a pretty lean staff and budget, and still try to take on a big mandate. Thank you to the dozens of other NFP’s in the city that make it a great place to live and work.

NFPs also have staff that dedicate extraordinary effort, and Innovation Factory certainly  benefits from that.  First, thank you to Emily Kinread who filled out our OBAA application, and helped me formulate some coherent sentences during filming. And thank you to our dedicated Board of Directors and my entire team of staff here at iF, including:

  • Henry Beckett
  • Marc Directo
  • Paolo Di Donato
  • Tammy Hwang
  • Emily Kinread
  • Bernard Lim
  • Peter Smith
  • Geordie Stewart
  • Elizabeth Thorsen
  • Kim Wojtczak

NFP’s also depend heavily on community partners. In the case of Innovation Factory, we have some truly incredible partners who provide a lot more than financial support. Its a big list, have a look:

  • City of Hamilton
  • KPMG
  • McMaster Innovation Park
  • Meridian Credit Union
  • McMaster University
  • Mohawk College
  • Gowlings
  • Ridout & Maybee
  • RBC
  • Banko Media
  • BHH Benefits
  • BDC
  • Carego
  • Canon
  • Deloitte
  • Express Employment
  • Factor(e)
  • FluidMedia
  • NetAccess
  • Pearson Dunn Insurance
  • Simpson Wigle
  • Town Media

The expression “it takes a village to raise a child” easily applies to NFPs, especially to Innovation Factory.  The list above is still only a small glimpse.  I could go on at length about the associations, clubs and other clusters that spark innovation in our city.  We’re also lucky to have great local press who support our clients and share their story. (I saw Meredith McLeod of the Spec live-tweeting yesterday!)

Have I missed anyone? Of course I have – I could name hundreds more individuals across the city who contribute to the success of iF and in turn, the success of our clients.  Hamilton, I thank you for making my job easy.

Congratulations to all the organizations and entrepreneurs nominated this year – we were in great company!
