Our Fall Innovation Night took place on November 10, and iF was pleased to feature a roster of 11 brave local startups who mustered up the courage to pitch to our live audience.
Innovation Night takes place three times a year, with local startups taking the stage at McMaster Innovation Park to present a succinct, two-minute elevator pitch – not an easy feat!
The pitch competition is Hamilton’s key event for innovators and entrepreneurs to practice and perfect their pitch, and present their ideas to the local business community.
Despite the gloomy weather, an enthusiastic group of innovation supporters came out to see the following companies pitch*:
180 Drums – an online drum tutorial website that teaches drummers of all skill levels and connects them to some of the best drummers in the world
2nd Opinion Medical – a platform where patients upload their dental X-rays and independent dental professionals are able to provide them with a second opinion on a procedure recommended by their dentist
Francium Consortium of Knowledge – a platform to raise awareness and educate the public about innovative and breakthrough science happening around us
Greenplate – a mobile app that sources home-cooked meals for takeout
IC Analyzer – a platform that verifies contractor and employer understanding of specific jobs and tasks and validates the contractor’s credentials
Laifa Baby – baby sleepers that combine two zippers in a single garment, making diaper changes quicker for the parent and safer for the baby.
Marlena Books – creating reading material for individuals with dementia to provide meaningful leisure and cognitive stimulation
Nefarious Dimensions – an independent game studio that’s working on their first project, Planetary Prospectors A.R.M., a survival space-mining game
Timpus – a mobile app (iOS+Android) that allows university students to one-button sync their personalized schedules to their mobile devices
VanWyn Inc. – a high-altitude balloon platform that can provide a cost-effective alternative to launching satellite systems for telecommunications infrastructure
Zentrela Inc. – a technological wellness solution that determines a driver’s different levels of fatigue by using EEG technology, preventing falling asleep at the wheel
Audience members were asked to cast their votes after hearing all pitches, to select two winners, one for Best Business Idea and one for Best Pitch. Once votes were tallied, Nicole Mortimer of Laifa Baby won Best Pitch, and Erinn van Wynsberghe of VanWyn Inc. won for Best Business Idea! Nicole and Erinn each took home an Ultimate Ears ROLL Bluetooth Wireless Speaker as their prize.
The event was filled with great networking opportunities for presenters and attendees alike!
