Since opening May 11, 2016, JLABS @ Toronto now hosts over 48 companies in its space. JLABS @ Toronto offers emerging life science companies modular lab units, office space, shared core laboratory equipment and business facilities. It also links the entrepreneurs with the full breadth of Johnson & Johnson Innovation, including opportunities for funding, third-party services, educational events and R&D experts from medical technology, consumer healthcare product and Janssen pharmaceutical teams.

Breanne Halyk and Karen Simonetti from JLABS will be here to talk about  their industry/startup partnerships, and their innovative accelerators across the globe.

About Breanne

Breanne is the Innovation Activation Specialist at Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS (JLABS @ Toronto). Breanne is responsible for marketing, events and communications of JLABS throughout Canada. Her role includes coordinating high-quality, diverse and distinctive programming ranging from one-on-one investor meetings, workshops and large panel series to networking, social events and grand openings.

Prior to joining JLABS @ Toronto, Breanne worked for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in Toronto as the Marketing & Events Associate, Business Development & Strategic Initiatives. In her role with Princess Margaret, Breanne worked on a number of their key fundraising events including OneWalk to Conquer Cancer, The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer and Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, where she was responsible for the planning and execution of numerous high-profile events, internal communications & marketing activities.

Breanne holds an Honours Business Degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University.

About Karen

Karen Somonetti is the Operations Manager at Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS located at JLABS @ Toronto. In this role, she is responsible for leading all aspects of the JLABS facilities and overall site management including accountability for regulatory compliance, security, budget development and management, customer relationship management and administration. She provides companies with support focused on JLABS excellence in the service delivery model and customer relationship management. Karen enables efficient operational work-flows to ensure compliance related to Environmental Health and Safety and Standard Operating Procedures. In addition, she is responsible for managing relationships with suppliers that assist with daily operations.

Prior to joining JLABS, Karen worked as a Project Manager leading healthcare projects in Mental Health and Dementia, while also serving as a research work package coordinator for AGE-WELL, Canada’s Technology and Aging Network, as part of federally-funded Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program. Her previous experience includes nearly a decade working as a Laboratory Research Project Manager at The Hospital for Sick Children’s Research Institute. In this role, she managed laboratory operations, coordinated equipment for the Molecular Structure and Function Program, and conducted research aiming to understand macromolecular complexes, amyloid assemblies, toxic peptides, elastomeric and viral membrane proteins.

Karen completed her MSc in Biological Sciences from Purdue University, where she was involved in interdisciplinary research projects and taught introductory biology courses. She also holds certificates in Project Management from the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, and an Applied Management (mini-MBA series) from Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management.
