Nefarious Dimensions is an independent game studio located here in Hamilton that is developing their debut game, Planetary Prospectors A.R.M. (Asteroid Resource Mining). We chatted with Founder Clinton Bowman about Planetary Prospectors and what’s next for his game studio – here’s what he had to say!
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COMPANY?
Growing up, I was always a huge fan of sci-fi and video games. It was a natural progression for me to begin developing my own sci-fi based games!
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF WHAT YOU DO ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?
Working with a team of creatives that are talented and professional. The team is really only as strong is its weakest link, so when we find a weakness we work together to improve and strengthen the chain.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART?
Competition is getting tougher all the time, which means we need to keep stepping up our game to make sure that we can compete at an international level. There are so many games being released into the market on a daily basis, so marketing the game to make sure we get noticed is crucial.
HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS?
To me, success is measured by how many people you can connect with and make happy, so they can have fun, smile and enjoy a brief break from reality. Our goal is to make sure to retain our gaming community and keep them happy, so that they continue to play our games and trust our brand.
WHAT IS THE BEST RECOGNITION YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
We have been featured in a number of websites dedicated to gaming, which is wonderful, but we’re building this game for our community. So, positive feedback from gamers enjoying Planetary Prospectors is the best recognition we can receive.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT YEAR AND BEYOND?
Our first game, Planetary Prospectors: ARM is currently available on Steam Early Access. It was really important for us to get an early version of our game up on Steam, as we want to hear from the players for feedback on our gameplay and storytelling. We care about the community and we want to make sure what we build is what they want; feedback, testing and iterative design are essential in game development, and our community can count on us to use their ideas and include them in our road map.
In 2016, having our game in Early Access will allow us to polish and fine-tune the game before it’s official release in the fall. We will also be focusing more heavily on our marketing efforts and attending as many trade shows and conferences as possible.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS OR STUDENTS STUDYING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN YOUR FIELD?
Really look to find your passion and what you like doing! There’s nothing more rewarding than a career doing something you’re truly excited about. I can say I’m quite lucky to be doing so.
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU FROM YOUR COMPETITION?
There are other games out there that similarly try to explore space mining to some degree, but we think Planetary Prospectors has made the mining experience more fun and interactive. Based around science, our game has many systems and mechanics in place that make it almost a virtual reality simulation rather than purely a game.
WHY IS HAMILTON THE HOME FOR YOUR COMPANY?
Hamilton is home to me, and I can’t imagine Nefarious Dimensions operating out of any other city. There is a huge wealth of talented professionals here, and I feel lucky to be able to work with them.
HOW CAN WE CONNECT WITH YOU?
